Earlier in the week, we reported that numerous collectors were finding the shipper containing the first wave of the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger Re-Ignition toys from Playmates Toy. Well yesterday, we also found them. We bought 2 complete sets of them, one to open and review while the other set is for my son that wanted them as well.
Auto-Morphin Black Ranger
Today we're taking a look at the Auto-Morphin Black Ranger from the Playmates Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Re-Ignition line.
One of the core things of any Power Rangers toy line is obviously the action figures, sure the roleplay toys are integral as well, but every kid wants their favorite Ranger and villain so they can re-create the epic battles and stories shown in the show or create their own stories of how the Power Rangers helped saved Angel Grove from the evil Decepticons (true story, I did this as a kid).
Packaging
The packaging for the basic series of action figures are like other toy lines, the toys come on a blister card but not just any type of blister, the blister for the Re-Ignition toys feature a cut away on the front and rear so you can try out the action feature which we'll get into each of the figure's action features later in their respective reviews.

Packaged inside the blister or bubble, is the Black Ranger with his Power Axe which the figure can hold either one in either hand or combine together. He also comes with two versions of the Blade Blaster, one in pistol form and other in the dagger form, which he can also hold in either hand or store one in his hip holster.
The front of the card has each of the individual core five Ranger helmets down the side, the Re-Ignition logo and "Head-Flippin' Morphin Action" across the top, and an insert showing off the "TRY ME!" action feature image and Auto-Morphin Black Ranger text along the bottom.

The rear of the card has the same Re-Ignition logo, Try Me action feature image as well as a basic summary of the Power Rangers which reads "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are five ordinary teens chosen to receive amazing abilities. They summon the spirits of their mighty Dinozords and morph into the incredible Power Rangers. When Evil Aliens look large, they Dinozords combine to form an even more colossal battle machine, the Megazord!"
There is also a short little bio with some basic information that reads; "Zack combines his love of dance and martial arts to form his unique Hip-Hop-Kido fighting style. Though courageous, he will often act as the voice of caution when a situation is unclear or dangerous. His signature weapon is the Power Axe. As a Power Ranger, Zack draws on power from the Mastodon Dinozord."
Name: Zack Taylor
Skill Set: Martial Arts, Dance
Personality: Courageous
Weapons: Power Axe, Blade Blaster
Dinozord: Mastodon
There is also a section of a checklist of the six Power Rangers, Rita Repulsa, Goldar, and Putty Patroller figures. It's interesting to note that this checklist on lists the action figures themselves with "Collect all the Power Rangers and Villains!" text and each of the toy types in this toy line have similar checklists on the rear of their package, I think it's a neat way of handling a large first and second wave (only in the United States, International releases aren't splitting the real first wave up like it's being done in the United States).
Action Feature

As I said before, each figure has their own action feature, and that's where I absolutely love the Auto-Morphin figures. Their action feature is the same action feature from 1993; their heads flip to morph between teenager and Power Ranger forms. Each of the Ranger figures have a tab on the back of them that when pressed down, triggers the mechanism to cause two flaps to open and the chest to rotate from one head to another. So, if you are on the unmorphed teenager head then it will "morph" them to their Power Ranger form and vice versa.
It's a very simple, effective, and fun action feature that is tried and true. It worked in 1993, and it works in 2025. Your Power Rangers could be having a tactical meeting in the Command Center, monsters attack, and they need to go "Back to action!", with a press of the lever you can morph them into Power Rangers and take the fight to the Evil Space Aliens.
Comparison
So how does Playmates Black Ranger compare to other Black Ranger's from other companies? Let's take a look and see!

Auto-Morphin Black Ranger's articulation obviously won't compare to the likes of the Hasbro's Lightning Collection or Bandai's Legacy figures, but it has plenty of articulation for kids to get poses and play with 15 points of articulation and even has similar articulation to the 2010 MMPR basic figure from Bandai.
I wish I owned more Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Black Ranger figures to compare this one to, but I'm still rebuilding my Power Rangers collection, so I have been cherry picking things in recent years, but this makes a great addition to my collection regardless.
For the price of $9.99, this is a great budget friendly Black Ranger figure and will be great for kids to protect their playrooms with.
So, what about you, will you be adding this Auto-Morphin Black Ranger figure to your collection or will you be skipping him? Sound off in the comments below!
